Alex and I couldn’t resist coming up with another new pizza flavor to accompany our homemade pizza dough video!  This variation is one of our favorites yet, with spicy Cajun seasoning taking center stage. We’ve paired it with our best homemade pizza sauce and a surprise ingredient – smoked gouda cheese – which takes the flavor up a notch! Keep reading for the Cajun pizza recipe.

Making Cajun pizza

How to make Cajun pizza

We hate picking favorites, but this Cajun pizza ranked number one of all the pizzas we made in a recent taste test. For the base of this pizza, it’s spread with our favorite Homemade Pizza Sauce, which takes just 5 minutes to whiz up in the blender and tastes incredible. The pizza sauce is sprinkled with Cajun seasoning to give it some spicy flair! Then add red onion, green pepper, spicy jalapeno pepper, and corn. And the best part: it’s topped with smoked gouda cheese, which gives it a meaty undertone. Of course feel free to customize the pizza toppings to your own spice level and ingredient preferences!

How to make pizza dough

For this Cajun pizza dough, we have a few pizza dough recipes that you can make depending on your tastes and equipment. Our Best Pizza Dough is our preferred method; we make it using stand mixer, but you can also knead it by hand. Our Easy Thin Crust method is similar but makes a thinner dough that you roll out. Or for even easier methods, you can try Sheet Pan Pizza or Cast Iron Pizza.

Here’s a video of Alex showing how to make and stretch the Italian pizza doughFast forward to 1:45 minutes to watch the stretching process!

This delicious Cajun pizza is sprinkled with Cajun seasoning and topped with red onion, green pepper, corn, and smoked gouda cheese.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Make the pizza dough: Follow the Best Pizza Dough recipe to prepare the dough. (This takes about 15 minutes to make and 45 minutes to rest.)
  2. Place a pizza stone in the oven and preheat to 500°F. OR preheat your pizza oven (here’s the pizza oven we use).
  3. Make the pizza sauce: Make the Homemade Pizza Sauce.
  4. Prepare the toppings: Cut the jalapeño pepper in half, remove the seeds, and finely dice it. Thinly slice the red onionChop the pepper. If the cheese is not yet shredded, grate it.
  5. Place the dough on the pizza peel:
  6. When the oven is ready, dust a pizza peel with cornmeal or semolina flour. (If you don’t have a pizza peel, you can use a rimless baking sheet or the back of a rimmed baking sheet. But a pizza peel is well worth the investment!) Stretch the dough into a circle; see this video for instructions. Then gently place the dough onto the pizza peel.
  7. Quickly assemble the pizza: Thinly spread the pizza sauce over the dough, then sprinkle liberally with Cajun seasoning. Sprinkle with as much smoked gouda and mozzarella cheese as you like. Top with red onion, jalapeno, corn, and green pepper (if using). Sprinkle with a bit of kosher salt.
  8. Bake the pizza: Transfer the pizza to the pizza stone using the pizza peel, and bake until the cheese and crust are nicely browned, about 5 to 7 minutes (or 1 minute in a pizza oven).

Cento is my default source for canned San Marzano tomato products. Pomi vacuum-packed tomatoes are an excellent substitute if the former is unavailable.

Love the responsive web design guys. Well played. :)

Thanks! Figured that if we were going to do a re-design, we wanted to pick a responsive theme. Still not a lot to choose from, but this one is working out for us :)

  3. Kim (Feed Me, Seymour)

I would eat this pizza every day if I could. My family is boring and won’t try anything new but I might force them so we can have this!

I had the pleasure of trying this and it was absolutely delicious! Thanks for letting us be your “taste testers”!
